Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before purchasing a recording.
Where does this footage come from?
All footage comes from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) public traffic camera network. These cameras are positioned along highways and major roads throughout Hampton Roads, including I-64, I-264, I-464, I-664, Route 58, and surrounding surface streets. LaneFlix is not affiliated with VDOT — we record and archive these publicly broadcast streams as a convenience service.
What is the video quality?
Videos are recorded at 320×240 resolution at approximately 15 frames per second, encoded in H.264. This is the native resolution broadcast by VDOT's camera infrastructure — we record the stream as-is without re-encoding or upscaling. The footage is suitable for documenting that an incident occurred, the general location, and approximate timing, but is not high-definition. License plates are generally not legible. We recommend reviewing the screenshot previews on each segment page before purchasing.
How long is each recording?
Each segment is a 1-hour block aligned to the clock hour (e.g., 2:00 PM–3:00 PM). If your incident happened at 2:38 PM, you would purchase the 2:00 PM segment, which covers the full hour containing that time. You can preview screenshots taken every minute throughout the segment to confirm your incident is visible before purchasing.
What file format will I receive?
Recordings are delivered as .mkv (Matroska) files. This format is widely compatible and can be played with VLC Media Player (free, available for Windows, Mac, and mobile), Windows Media Player, QuickTime (with a codec), and most video editing software. If the file opens in your browser instead of downloading, hover over the video player, click the three-dot menu, and choose "Download."
How do I receive my purchase?
After your payment is confirmed, you will receive an email containing a secure download link. This typically arrives within a minute or two. The link is valid for 72 hours and allows up to 5 downloads. Check your spam folder if you don't see the email. If you have trouble, contact us at admin@laneflix.com.
How far back does your footage go?
We retain footage for 7 days. Recordings older than 7 days are automatically deleted. If your incident occurred more than 7 days ago, we unfortunately cannot recover that footage. If you need footage urgently, purchase as soon as possible before the retention window closes.
What if the camera was offline during my incident?
We record 24/7, but camera availability depends on VDOT's infrastructure. Cameras occasionally go offline for maintenance, due to power issues, or for other reasons beyond our control. Before purchasing, use the screenshot previews on the segment page to verify that footage exists for the time you need. We strongly recommend confirming your incident is visible in the screenshots before completing your purchase.
Can I use this footage as evidence in court or for an insurance claim?
This footage comes from public VDOT cameras and may be useful for insurance claims, legal proceedings, or personal reference. However, we make no guarantees about its admissibility or usefulness for any specific legal purpose. Consult an attorney regarding the use of video evidence in your jurisdiction. We can provide documentation about the source of the footage upon request.
What is your refund policy?
Because footage is delivered digitally and immediately upon purchase, all sales are generally final. However, if there is a technical issue preventing you from downloading or playing the file, contact us at admin@laneflix.com and we will work to resolve it. We want you to be able to use what you paid for.
Are you affiliated with VDOT or the government?
No. LaneFlix is an independent service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the Commonwealth of Virginia, or any government agency. We access the same publicly available camera streams that anyone can view on 511.vdot.virginia.gov and archive them as a convenience for the public.
My download link expired. Can I get a new one?
Download links expire after 72 hours. If yours expired before you were able to download, email us at admin@laneflix.com with your order details and we will issue a new link, provided the footage is still within the 7-day retention window.
